Praying for Himala sa Simala [Simala Church, Cebu]

The easiest isn’t always the best. That was the lesson I had to be reminded of the hard way on my 30th birthday, as we spent a gruelling 17 hours riding all imaginable modes of transportation. I am not even kidding —
1 Plane
1 van
4 tricycle
3 bus
1 RORO
1 fast craft
1 multi-cab
Oh, and a sprinkle of bus breakdown to complete the adventure, please.

The destination? The miraculous Simala Church of Sibongan, Cebu. To be fair, it didn’t have to be that complicated if we were coming from Cebu. But as it was, we came from Dumaguete, and I chose the “easier” way which turned out to be the longer, more tiring, slightly more expensive way.

Confession: I knew very little about the church prior to our visit. All I knew was that there’s a castle-like Church in Cebu dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and being a believer and devotee, I thought it was a good idea to spend my birthday there. Apparently, it is home to the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary which supposedly shed tears of blood, and which has since been flocked by pilgrims from all over the country for the many miracles – and many testimonials support it – it has provided to the faithful.

Despite the long travel, I must say it was worth it. It meant a lot to me, having sought her intercession countless times, that I was able to say my thanks for 30 years of guidance, protection, and answered prayers.

There are a lot of things that can be improved – it can feel chaotic and disorganized, and it doesn’t feel as serene as it deserves to be – but it is still in a class of its own. I’ve never seen anything like it, especially in the Philippines.
